A Land Waiting for its Discoverer

Archaeological exhibition

November 22  January 26, 2024

Gallery of Masterpieces

After the end of World War II, today's Western Pomerania became part of Poland as part of the so-called Recovered Territories. An outstanding researcher of this region, prof. Władysław Łosiński wrote in one of his articles: after the legacy of German archaeology, it was a country waiting for its discoverer. We invite you to an exhibition presenting the process of discovering archaeological treasures in these areas.

The first archaeological research in Western Pomerania began in 1947, among the ruins of the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle in Szczecin, destroyed as a result of war. Their further conduct was possible thanks to a great scientific undertaking, the so-called millennium research – a research project carried out by the Management of Research on the Origins of the Polish State, established in 1949 – an institution headed by prof. Aleksander Gieysztor. Later, Wolin and Kołobrzeg were also included in the research program.

The photos come from the archives of the Regional Museum. Andrzej Kaube in Wolin, the Center for the Middle Ages of the Baltic Countries of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard, as well as from private collections. We would like to thank for making them available prof. Marian Rębkowski, Ph.D. hab. Andrzej Janowski, Ph.D. hab. Marcin Majewski, Ph.D. Beata Wywrot-Wyszkowska, Ph.D. Wojciech Filipowiak, Dr. Teresa Kiersnowska, Hubert Kiersnowski and Marek Dworaczyk.

The exhibition is available as part of a ticket to the Gallery of Masterpieces
